Orphans

Orphans are the most vulnerable people group on the planet and without help many of them spend their lives on the streets or living in slums struggling to survive.

Overview

There are 143 million orphans worldwide. This number increases daily with the spread of HIV/AIDS and as violent conflict ravages many countries. Orphans are also vulnerable targets for the sex trade with no other way to survive.

Factors

What the cause is about:

Disease

In poor communities where disease runs rampant and where there is little access to medical care many children are left orphaned to fend for themselves.

Conflict

Because of violent conflict and war in so many developing countries thousands of children are finding themselves orphaned and displaced with nowhere to go. Some are kidnapped and forced to fight as child soldiers while others live in refugee camps or slums with little hope for their future.

HIV / AIDS

In places like Africa the AIDS epidemic is killing millions of parents leaving just as many children without care or protection from their parents. Many of these children are HIV positive themselves and will be shunned by their community.

Violent Oppression

Violent oppressors prey on society’s most vulnerable people. Orphans are among the most vulnerable and are at great risk for abuse and exploitation.

Education

Without the support of parents and with no money to go to school millions of orphans grow up illiterate and uneducated with little hope.

Hope

Education

Providing education for orphans opens up the door to opportunity and gives them the tools to build a hopeful future.

Homes

Providing the stability of a home for orphans is crucial. Being cared for by a loving adult helps to restore dignity and self worth.

Care

Caring for orphans means meeting their physical needs such as water, food, clothing, and shelter. They also need medical care especially if they are HIV positive.

Needs

Caring for orphans goes beyond meeting their physical needs, we must care for the whole person by addressing their emotional and spiritual needs. This requires lots of effort but is critical for orphans to realize their potential. This is best achieved in a close-knit community, often with other orphans. Their shared experience and support brings healing and hope.

Community

When orphans are properly cared for they become integral members of their community and contribute in ways that add life to the community and build hope for the future.
